What is Rotary Friendship Exchange?
It is a program started in 1984 by Rotary International which offers "participating Rotarians the opportunity to make a personal contribution to advancing world understanding while expanding their own horizons".
District 7430 has embraced the concept of Rotary Friendship Exchanges. In 2006 8 Rotarians and spouses from the Allentown West Rotary Club visited District 4160 and were generously hosted by the Club Rotario Morelia of Morelia, Michoacán, México. The Team Leader was D7430 RFE Chair Alicia Ruiz Orbin
This year an exchange with District 9940 in New Zealand is underway with Rotarians from the Emmaus Rotary Club.
Types of RFEs promoted by District 7430?
- Team program
Rotarian couples (typically four to six) visit several communities in a host district. This is the most common type of RFE.
- Univocational
Rotarians of the same occupation observe how their job is done in other countries.
Who may apply and when to apply?
District 7430 Rotary Club Rotarians interested in participating must apply through their club president. Please be aware that not every district participates in Friendship Exchange.
The Rotarians members of the Club and their partners are eligible to participate.
Participating Rotarians agree to host the visiting Rotarians for the duration of the reciprocal visit.
It is recommended that clubs apply at least a year in advance of the desired date for the exchange to account for the weather conditions in both participating countries.
How long is a typical exchange?
Generally 9-14 days, although the participating clubs determine/agree on the duration of the exchange.
What happens on an exchange?
An RFE is not necessarily highly organized; however, access to local knowledge and people provides the opportunity to see places and participate in events which might otherwise be missed.
An itinerary and exchange logistics are generally organized by the Team Leader of the host club or District in consultation with the Team leader of the visiting club or District. Hosting may be with one club and one host family or with 3-4 separate clubs and host families. Transport is by rental cars or a minibus paid by the visiting Rotarians. A potential benefit is the doors which Rotary connections may open.
Who co-ordinates the exchange?
Both the District RFE Committee and the requesting District 7430 Club are responsible for the coordination of the exchange as follows:
District RFE Chair/Committee Responsibilities
District Governors from participating districts appoint a District Friendship Exchange Chair whose main responsibility is to connect the District 7430 RFE Team Leader with the RFE Coordinator/Team Leader from the other country and to serve as a resource/consultant to the District 7430 requesting club.
The District RFE Chair:
§ Contacts the RFE Chair of the selected countries to find out their interest in an RFE with our District/Club. The District 7430 RFE Chair is the official liaison with the District RFE from the other country.
§ Confirms the RFE based on the countries that responded positively to the request and the choice priorities and the dates of arrival and departure for each reciprocal visit (inbound/outbound) as indicated in the “Club Request Form.” Generally reciprocal visits take place within the next year or so.
§ Connects the RFE Team Leader from District 7430 Club with the RFE Coordinator/Team Leader from the visiting country/District.
§ Serves as troubleshooter for concerns that need to be addressed at the District level.
The District RFE Chair and Committee:
§ Serve as resource/Consultant to the Club Team Leader and RFE Committee
§ Promote/publicize the RFE among clubs and through the District Web site
§ Provides RI with the necessary information about the RFE
The Requesting Club Responsibilities:
§ Appoints an RFE Team Leader as the main contact Rotarian responsible for communicating with the District 7430 Chair/Committee and for coordinating the logistics and itinerary, for both the inbound and outbound (reciprocal) visits, with the Rotarian appointed by the RFE Club/District of the other participating country.
§ The Club RFE Team Leader and the participating Rotarians form a committee responsible for local arrangements, hosting, itineraries, social events, etc.
§ IF the RFE Team Leader of the requesting District 7430 Club agrees to a District-to-District exchange with another country, such Club RFE Team Leader is responsible for securing host families from other District 7430 Clubs and coordinating the logistics and itineraries with those clubs.
§ Provides the RFE District Committee with the information required by RI.
Who pays for the exchange?
The exchange is funded entirely by the individuals who participate and is carried out at no expense to Rotary International.
Small gifts are given to hosts as a gesture of appreciation.
Why participate?
The Rotary Friendship Exchange program gives Rotarians the opportunity to experience other cultures firsthand, by participating in reciprocal visits with Rotarians from other countries.
The goal of the program is to advance international understanding, goodwill, and peace through person-to-person contacts across national boundaries.
The 4th Object of Rotary International “The advancement of International understanding, goodwill and peace through world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.”
Rotary Friendship Exchange is a practical and enjoyable way of implementing this object and the benefits derived are long lasting and important to all.
- Lasting Friendships
- A greater understanding of Rotary International
- An appreciation of how Rotary International makes a difference around the world
- New ideas and projects can be discovered
- A greater understanding of other races, religions, climate, food, culture.
By staying with Rotary families we hope to gain a greater insight into the true character of a Country and how Rotary influences the lives of many people; something you cannot always appreciate when travelling as a tourist.
