CLUB NEWS

Throughout the spring and early summer, our members have been busy with many learning opportunities, service projects, and events benefitting local and global initiatives. Recently, we were presented with an update from Hailey, VP of Publicity for the Interact Club at Whitehall High School. They logged 303 hours of volunteer service, the most of any club in the High School! We are so impressed with their service and the breadth of organizations they have touched.  Some of their projects included the Whitehall Food Pantry, Fellowship Community, The Nyonblee Cares Foundation, breast cancer awareness and our own Jingle Bell Run. Keep up the good work serving our community and beyond!  **  Whitehall Area Rotary members were at the Whitehall Coplay School District’s April Family Night, representing the Club as well as their own business/organization. Kudos to Rotarian Michelle Khouri, District Registrar/Community Relations at Whitehall Coplay School District, for organizing such a beneficial community event.  **  Club members also participated in the District 7430 Conference and had a table in the House of Inspiration. **  Planning has begun and publicity is getting ready to launch for our upcoming 8th Annual Jingle Bell 8K Run/5K Walk on Saturday, December 7, 2024. All ages and running abilities are welcome, and the course is dog-friendly.  For more information about the event, please click here.   **  We continue to serve the local community through our monthly SUNshine box and food distribution at the Whitehall Food Pantry, and our Clean-Up of MacArthur Road in the township. Our bike repair station, purchased through a Rotary District 7430 grant, has been installed at the Whitehall Trailhead of the Ironton Rail Trail. Our Whitehall Area Rotary Foundation has granted contributions to local organizations, including the Whitehall High School Interact Club, the Whitehall High School Aevidum Club for suicide prevention banners, and the Knights of Columbus for their Cornhole Tournament benefitting Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative and Parkland CARES.  The Foundation also funded registration fees for local students to attend both Camp Neidig and Stem YEA. We look forward to another great year with Ed Hozza as president, as we share “The Magic of Rotary!”

September 14th: The 3rd Annual Wicket Good Times Croquet Tournament, held at The Mennonite Heritage Center in Harleysville, PA, hosted 84 croquet players of all ages and skill levels from "never played before" to "plays all the time and is really good"!  This event's net proceeds, which benefited The Indian Valley Boys & Girls Club, were about $16K!   There was so much interest that we added 4 croquet courts and 24 more players.   Players commented on how well run our event was!  Guess we got it nailed down after the 1st 2 years.  Beginners got a lesson/instructions before the games began and we intend to invite all players to keep playing with us throughout the next year so that they can hone their skills for next year!
October 12th Adopt-A-Highway Day: meets at Harleysville Bank, Sumneytown Pike & Clemens Rd.  We will clean up several roadways around the township.  This is a twice a year event and helps to keep our town beautiful!  We've been doing every year for almost as long as our club has existed.  We are celebrating our 30th anniversary in October!
October 19th: The Halloween Parade and Family Funfest, which has been going for 20+ years, starts at The Indian Valley Middle School, Maple Ave, Harleysville about 10am following the judging and prize awards for best costumes!   The parade ends at the Community Center, 425 Park Ave, Harleysville, and the Family Funfest begins!   No charge to the community... games and candy drop included!

Potato Project Harvest 2024  The Rotary Club of Kutztown organized a potato harvest at the Kutztown University Farm on September 29. We served in conjunction with The Potato Project which annually grows and donates 200,000 pounds of potatoes, and grows and donates corn, carrots and squash to the Helping Harvest Food Bank in Reading, Pa. Students and staff from Alvernia College harvested three containers of potatoes on Sunday morning so Rotarians finished the job by bagging those potatoes and boxing pumpkins. Rotarians from the Kutztown, Fleetwood, Bethlehem, and West Reading-Wyomissing Clubs contributed to the service and enjoyed Berks beef hotdogs, fresh French fries and beverages. The Kutztown Rotary Club has participated annually since 2010 and thanks other Rotarians who increase the District 7430 impact!

On September 11th the club joined the community at the Hartsville Fire Company annual memorial for those who perished in the attacks.  Since 2003 the fire company has held a Flag Memorial on September 11th. It consists of a display of over 343 American flags on the front lawn of the fire station. Each flag represents a New York City firefighter who died on 9-11-2001.   On September 18th, WRC hosted our STEM Yea camp participants Stem Yea is a 4-Day 3-Night Residential Academy for middle school students in Rotary District #7430.  Warminster Rotary club sponsors students annually. At the camp, participants are engaged in STEP-based education that not only teaches science and mathematics concepts but is designed to help develop a variety of the skill sets that our modern world needs.    Our township annual Warminster Day celebration was on Saturday, September 28, 2024. We were soaking it in while getting soaked by the steady rain that fell on that day! The event featured all things Warminster and included a variety of vendor booths, entertainment, food, and Touch A Truck where visitors got to see all the heavy equipment vehicles used in our township.
On October 9th, WRC welcomed speaker Ray “Opie” Bates, president of the local chapter of BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse).  BACA exists with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children.  They are a body of Bikers whose mission is to empower children to not be afraid of the world in which they live.  They lend support to our wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. The organization desires to send a clear message to all involved with an abused child that this child is part of their organization, and that they are prepared to lend our physical and emotional support to them by affiliation, and their physical presence. BACA stands ready to shield these children from further abuse. WRC proudly supports this organization with a grant from our Foundation.

The West Reading Fall Fest was a remarkable day for community engagement and showcased West Reading-Wyomissing Rotary Club's dedication to creating enduring change through local service projects and worldwide humanitarian efforts. Their Wilson Interact Club and the soon-to-be-chartered Rotaract Berks County Club joined in this daylong community service event to tell their stories. The distribution of 500 free tree seedlings underscored our commitment to environmental sustainability, with many seen carrying them along the Avenue. Individuals registered to honor heroes in their lives by dedicating a U.S. Flag during the 2025 Berks County Field of Heroes the week of July 4th. Additionally, visitors took the opportunity to discover more about our Youth Program scholarships, leadership camps, academies, and exchange programs.

Second Alarmers Association and Rescue Squad  - On July 9th, Ken Davidson, Assistant Chief of SARS (Second Alarmers Association and Rescue Squad), spoke to our club about the critical role that his squad plays in providing crucial lifesaving emergency medical services. Ken has been a member of the SARS team for over 30 years and provided a refresher course on CPR and how important it is to provide this technique during the first minutes to a patient in need. He also provided an update on the industry's most advanced technology which provides a more accurate and time-sensitive CPR response. SARS provides these services to over 49,000 households in Montgomery County and is also the primary contracted EMS agency for 15 miles of the Pennsylvania Turnpike from the Willow Grove Interchange to Philadelphia. SARS has developed one of the leading training centers in the 5-county area, offering community first-aid and CPR classes as well as providing numerous courses for first responders. We followed up the meeting by providing a supportive donation to SARS.
Wings and Wheels - On September 7th, we joined the annual 'Wings and Wheels' event at Wings Field, our local airport. Wings ‘N Wheels is a long-running outdoor, family focused community event which attracts adults and children for a lively display of vintage and antique cars and aircraft. Taking Action on Food Insecurity  The Lehigh Valley Passport Rotary Club helps to prepare a meal every month at the Lehigh Conference of Church’s Daybreak shelter in Allentown.  Three or four people from the club help the professional chef with food preparation, cooking and packaging the meals. (The kitchen is not large enough to accommodate any more than the 3-4 volunteers.) We then serve the meals to the adults and families served by the shelter. We typically serve over 100 meals.  It is a fun and very meaningful activity for the club members who are able to participate. We have also started volunteering once a month at the Allentown Area Ecumenical Food Bank. There, we pack food to be delivered to senior citizens. In September, seven club members packed bags of fresh food that were delivered the next day to 65 senior citizens. This activity is another great way to give back to the community.

Remembering Al Engel
We are saddened to share the news of the recent passing of a longtime member of our club, Al Engel. During his time with our club, Al served as our club president 2015-16 and, most recently, as co-chair of the Indian Valley Beer Fest and chair for our scholarships and STEM YEA endeavors. He was especially passionate about strengthening the opportunities for our youth through the STEM YEA program. In losing Al, we lost a friend and a champion of our community. We send our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Nancy, and family.
Indian Valley Beer Fest
On Saturday, July 27, 2024, our club and Indian Valley Public Library co-hosted the Beer Fest at Souderton Park. With 20 breweries, wineries, and distilleries and a host of home brew offerings, the community enjoyed not only tasty treats but also fellowship with one another and some braved the karaoke microphone!
Pictured left are Rotarians Dave Washam, club Treasurer and Frank Tranzilli, club Vice President.
Merit Scholarship Award  We recently recognized our Merit Scholarship Winners: Andrea Flores (sitting), Bradly Evans and Megan Wilkinson. We enjoyed hearing about their experience in the  Interact Club we sponsor at SA High School and their plans for next year, which includes Rotaract!    Concert Sundaes:  Souderton Concert Sundaes is one of our favorite events. A beloved summer tradition that brings live music and sweet treats to the community, our members always enjoy it when it is our turn to flex our ice cream-scooping muscles.  Rotarian Suzi Berry, pictured left is ready to scoop!

STEM YEA
We were thrilled to welcome Emma, one of the student participants from this summer's STEM YEA camp at Kutztown University, hosted by Rotary District 7430.
