District 7430 STEM Youth Explorer Academy

In the US today there is a large disparity between the number of STEM college graduates and position openings. The STEM disciplines are key to Rotary’s success in delivering on its “Seven Areas of Focus”.   Over the past year a special team has worked to develop a four-day three-night residential STEM focused Academy providing opportunities for underserved middle school students (12-13-year-olds) in District 7430.  The activities and curriculum are built around the STEM disciplines with the intent of inspiring our youth to consider a STEM area as an educational focus while coaching team building and leadership skills.  In addition, the program intends to engage the students post-academy to participate in other STEM programs in their schools and in their communities.

Retired Lieutenant Colonel Terry Hart, former NASA Mission Specialist Astronaut on the STS-41-C Challenger Space Shuttle and professor at Lehigh University a supporter and participant in this program, recently told Lehigh University graduates, “Throughout your careers, you will have many opportunities to be a member of a team focused on accomplishing something very new and challenging.”   We hope you will see this as your opportunity to participate and make a meaningful impact in the lives of these students.
